New Delhi: India has successfully test-fired the Agni-5 intermediate-range ballistic missile, showcasing its strategic military capabilities and enhancing its deterrence posture. According to the Defence Ministry, the missile has a range of up to 5,000 kilometers, significantly extending India’s strike capability.

The launch took place on Wednesday from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha, and met all operational and technical parameters, the ministry confirmed.

“The intermediate-range ballistic missile ‘Agni-5’ was successfully test-fired from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha on August 20,” the statement said.

Extending India’s Strike Reach

The Agni-5 missile brings almost the entire Asian continent, including northern China, and parts of Europe within India’s strategic coverage. It is the latest in the Agni missile series, which already includes Agni-1 to Agni-4 with ranges from 700 km to 3,500 km.

Key Features of Agni-5

Type: Intermediate-range ballistic missile

Payload: Capable of carrying nuclear warheads

Launch Capability: From mobile platforms and integrated test ranges

Propulsion: Three-stage solid-fuel rocket for enhanced mobility and readiness

Strategic Significance

The successful test strengthens India’s nuclear deterrence strategy, especially in the context of regional security challenges. It comes nearly three and a half months after military tensions with Pakistan and follows a previous Agni-5 test in March last year.

Recent Missile Developments

India has been conducting multiple missile tests to bolster its strategic capabilities. In July, the country successfully test-fired Prajna, a short-range surface-to-surface missile capable of carrying conventional warheads weighing between 500 to 1,000 kilograms.
